19th Annual J.B. Douglas Postgraduate Awards

The 19th Annual J.B. Douglas Postgraduate Awards were held at UTS on 28 November 2018. The Awards, named for the late Jim Douglas — a pioneering Australian statistician and statistical educator — see postgraduate statisticians from across New South Wales present their research in 20-minute talks.

This year, the eight presenters were Andrew Phillip (University of Sydney), Andrew Locke (Macquarie University), Tea Uggen (University of Technology Sydney), Mijanur Rahman (University of Newcastle), Mazin Aouf (Western Sydney University), Tom Whitaker (University of New South Wales), Luke Mazur (University of Wollongong) and Doan Khue Dung Dang (UNSW Business School).

As ever, the presentations covered a wide range of applications and were of a high standard. The judging panel consisted of NSW Branch President Professor Jake Olivier, Annual Lecturer Professor Ray Chambers and Mr Carlos Zorzin from event sponsors SAS. The judges’ decision was based on presentation, innovation and potential impact, and they emphasised that it was not an easy choice. In particular, the top three speakers were difficult to separate, with honourable mentions going to Andrew Phillip and Tom Whitaker.

The winner was ACEMS and UTS student Tea Uggen, whose presentation “Automated Classification of Post-Stroke Aphasia by Severity” showed an important application of natural language processing and machine learning to the assessment of communication impairment in stroke survivors. Congratulations to Tea and her supervisors, Tapan Rai, Louise Ryan and Erin Godecke.

The NSW Branch would like to recognise and thank the event sponsors: ACEMS, SAS, SSA Cent
