Beware - Phishing Scammers
The past fortnight has been a busy one for scammers!
We are aware of several statistical societies being targeted around the world, including SSA. Phishing emails have been sent out to some of our members that are impersonating me. The scams may ask you to transfer funds, click on a link to pay an invoice (that "I" will reimburse you for), ask you to call a phone number (where you might be pressured to pay some money), or share other confidential information. The phishing emails may use enough information naming mutual colleagues or other SSA Office Bearers that they can read as plausible (if unusual) requests.
Be aware that the SSA Executive Committee and SSA staff will never contact you in this way to ask for money or other confidential information. Please check email addresses carefully, do not click on links in suspicious emails, and verify information through other trusted channels.
Please let us know of any suspicious emails as soon as possible. I can be contacted on 08 8313 0234 if you have any doubts about the integrity of an email that appears to be from me.
Lynne Giles, SSA President

A practical LangChain tutorial for data scientists to inspect CSVs. Chatbots answer questions, agents perform actions. That’s exactly what we’re going to try out in today’s article. In this article, we’ll use LangChain and Python to build our own CSV sanity check agent. With this agent, we’ll automate typical exploratory data analysis (EDA) tasks as displaying columns, detecting missing values (NaNs) and retrieving descriptive statistics.

The master's thesis of Victhor Simoes Sartorio, which culminated in this paper, was funded by CNPq (National Concil for Cientific and Technological Development). They propose an automatic method for clustering multivariate time-series data based on mixtures of Dynamic Linear Models. Unlike traditional time-series clustering methods that yield static membership parameters, our approach allows each time series to dynamically change cluster memberships over time.

Statistical Consulting Network Monthly Meet-Up
Last Friday of the month, 12-1 PM AEST. Come along with your thinking cap, maybe a problem, and some lunch! The Statistical Consulting Network invites you to their monthly meet-up, a virtual lunchtime meeting where statisticians can help each other out with challenging problems or just discuss topical issues. This virtual meeting is held on Zoom at lunchtime on the last Friday of each month, 12-1 PM (AEST). We start each meet-up with announcements, or occasionally a special topic discussion, then discuss problems that attendees have brought along with them.
We also have a Slack workspace where members of the consulting network can communicate between meetings, or post problems or relevant materials they would like to discuss during a meeting.
