SSA's Mentoring Program & Benefits
Mentorship is a relationship between two people, where the mentor provides advice and guidance to their mentee to help them grow, learn and develop professionally. It can be a rewarding experience for both mentors and mentees alike and offers numerous benefits including helping others reach their goals. Here are some of the benefits:
Benefits to the Mentee
Receives guidance and support from a respected member of the community. Professional development opportunities. Increased confidence. Increased institutional knowledge and understanding. Greater awareness of other approaches and methods. Builds a network of colleagues and expands knowledge. Having a confidential sounding board for ideas and challenges.
Benefits to the Mentor
Provides fulfillment and satisfaction of helping others and contributing to the development of the individual. Extends network and builds community. Supports use and development of key competencies leading to growth. Encourages examination of the status quo and alternative possibilities. Encourages renewed ideas and perspectives on one’s leadership role.
The SSA Mentoring program is led by the Mentoring Committee and offers a program that members have benefitted. Visit our website to learn more. _________ The SSA Mentoring Program Committee

AI Model that checks for skin cancer shows promise
Scientists developed a way of using artificial intelligence to check for skin cancer with the AI tool, which was trained on data from 53,601 skin lesions from 25,105 patients, outperforming existing methods in a new study.
Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University, Check4Cancer, University of Essex and Addenbrooke's Hospital worked on the AI model which was trained on data from 53,601 skin lesions from 25,105 patients. In this study, researchers used machine learning and combination theory to distil 22 clinical features down to the seven most important that predict if a skin lesion might be suspicious or not.

The Reliability of Retail Payment Services
Australians are increasingly dependent on the continuous availability of electronic payment systems. As such, every incident or outage can potentially cause inconvenience or economic harm for end-users of those systems. This article presents insights into the reliability of payment systems using information from the RBA’s retail payment incidents dataset. The article notes that retail payment services have an average availability of at least 99.8 per cent each quarter. Online banking and fast payments services are most likely to be affected from outages, with root causes relating to issues with third parties, software and change management. Given the wide-reaching impact of outages, the effective management of operational risk in the payments system has never been more important.

Statistical Consulting Network Monthly Meet-Up
25 Oct 2024 | 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM (AEST) | Online
Come along with your thinking cap, maybe a problem, and some lunch!
The Statistical Consulting Network invites you to their monthly meet-up, a virtual lunchtime meeting where statisticians help each other out with problems that they aren’t sure how to deal with. This virtual meeting is held on Zoom at lunchtime on the last Friday of each month, 12:30-1:30 PM (AEST). We start each meet-up with announcements, or occasionally a special topic discussion, then discuss problems that attendees have brought along with them.
We also have a Slack workspace where members of the consulting network can communicate between meetings, or post problems or relevant materials they would like to discuss during a meeting.
