Speaker: Dr Tom Verhelst, Head of Regional Innovation Data Lab, Griffith University


Biography: Dr Tom Verhelst is the Program Director at Griffith University’s Regional Innovation Data Lab (RIDL). In this role he works identify and fast-track innovative solutions that address long-standing urban and regional challenges by using “place”, rather than discipline or agency, as the data linking framework.

Dr Verhelst has strong global industry R&D experience in applying novel platform technologies towards scientific advancement to generate beneficial socioeconomic impacts. He worked previously as the Associate Director of R&D IT at UCB Biopharma (Top 30 Global pharmaceutical company) in Belgium and in the UK and as a program lead and consultant for PerkinElmer (Fortune 500 company) in Europe, the Middle East, North America and India.

Title: Data Co-Ops in Australia, collaborations between Universities, Government, ABS, Services Sector and Business.

Private-public data collaborations are new forms of collaboration and it involves participants from different levels of government, service sector, not-for-profit organisations and companies – sharing data to create public value through shared responsibilities. Creating these collaborations requires facilitating independent and trusted agents that bridge the different worlds of business & government and are motivated by creating public value. RIDL & SODA are the 2 facilitating data labs advocating and running data collaborations for the creation of common good in Australia.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF BRANCH COUNCIL

Nominations are called for the positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer and members of Branch Council for 2020 in accordance with Rule 12b of the Branch. Nominations should be received, in writing, by the Secretary, on or before Tuesday 3rd March 2020. Such nominations shall be signed by at least two members, and shall be accompanied by the candidate's written statement of willingness to stand. Nomination forms will also be provided at the AGM.
