SpeakerAlberto Nettel-Aguirre, University of Wollongong

Topic: Biostatistics collaborations in Health and Social research: The road taken.

Abstract: A Biostatistician immersion in applied research can be thought of as one career road to take, say, opposite to methodology development. And yet, even within such road there are different ways to play the role of a biostatistician/researcher. In this talk I will give my take on what I consider being a truly collaborative biostatistician, along with some examples. I will also touch on some of the short strolls I’ve taken on the other road.

BiographyAlberto Nettel-Aguirre joined UOW in Jan 2021 and leads the Centre for Health and Social Analytics within National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia at UOW. During the previous 15 years at the University of Calgary, Canada, he developed his career working collaboratively in health and medical research and has worked extensively as a biostatistician in a range of projects, namely within paediatrics (nephrology, neonatology and neurology among others) and injury prevention. His experience and interests cover biostatistics and methods for health and social research, machine learning, data science, social network analysis and functional data analysis. Alberto is part of the college of reviewers for CIHR (Canadian equivalent to NHMRC) and was active scientific reviewer for the provincial ethics board for 7 years. Alberto will be taking the role of co-chair of the biostatistics section along with Nicola Armstrong (QUT) for the SSA.
