From counting blueberries to Chief Statistician: practicing the theory of statistics

I would like to dedicate this lecture to all applied statisticians who work tirelessly behind the scenes in helping others make sense of the world around us. I will talk about my learnings, experiences and dilemmas in applying principles and theory of statistics in practice. I will share the joys of collaboration and “aha” moments that come from solving messy problems or just from feeling useful!

About Dina

A practical statistician with a passion for developing and delivering fit-for-purpose solutions that combine statistical rigour with a pragmatic approach to design, collection and analysis of data. Dina is especially interested in adapting traditional methods and introducing new methods to mitigate the ever-growing selection, coverage and non-response biases in modern day surveys. Dina works to advance statistics as a profession through mentoring of young statisticians and other data professionals, being involved with the professional societies and initiatives, and inter-disciplinary collaborations. Collaborating with colleagues at the Social Research Centre to establish and grow the first and, still the only, probability-based online panel in Australia, Life in Australia™, is one of the highlights of her career.
