Panel Discussion

The Ethics of Data and AI

We hope this event will stimulate those who spend much time analysing data to think deeply and constructively about navigating ethical conflicts, especially in this age of big data and powerful machine-learning models. The focus will be mostly on 'weak AI', i.e., the kinds of models that already exist, rather than future superhuman intelligence.

Topics put to the panelists will include:

  • Bias, fairness, and transparency in models and decision making.
  • Privacy, ownership, and permission to use data.
  • Diversity and inclusion in training models.
  • Moral responsibility for AI failures.
  • How do we decide upon what is ethically right?
  • Role of legislation and regulation.

About the Panelists

  • Dr Julia Powles (UWA Tech and Policy Lab, specialist in legal matters & AI).
  • Dr Michael Rubin (UWA Discipline of Philosophy, teaches Ethics for the Digital Age and specialises in moral disagreement).
  • Natalia Kacperek (Chief Data Officer for WA government).
