Mentoring is about more than offering guidance—it is about helping students unlock their potential and achieve their own goals.

In this short course, participants will work through exercises of:

  • active listening
  • Asking open-ended questions
  • Coaching in a way that fosters student independence

Through interactive activities, participants will learn how to give feedback that is heard and learn to partner with students to support their growth without directing their path. By the end of the session, participants will walk away with practical tools to create mentoring experiences that drive student success.

About the presenter:

A/Prof Tanya P. Garcia - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA

Collaborating with neuroscientists and biologists, Tanya’s research focuses on extracting maximal information from large, highly correlated data structures and has led to scientific discoveries in neurodegenerative diseases and the gut microbiome. Her leadership promotes the success of underrepresented groups in (bio)statistics.
