BIO: Neville Bartlett

Neville undertook his statistical studies at Flinders University under the guidance of Prof John Darroch, also a former President of the SSA. He was initially employed by the CSIRO Division of Mathematics and Statistics (8 years) after he completed his PhD. His work mainly involved consulting with other scientists.

He then moved into the private sector working for Mars Inc (13 years), a large privately-owned multinational company. He was based in the Albury-Wodonga region and his work there included sales forecasting, operations research and management science. He was able to further develop his computing skills during this time.

His final career move was to start his own statistical consulting business whilst still working in the Albury-Wodonga region. A lot of his work involved the use of relatively new technology tools like R and Visual Basic for Applications in Excel. His term as President of the SSA was during this period.

Some of Neville’s other initiatives as President were:

  • The introduction of the ‘President’s Corner’ article in the SSA Newsletter.
  • Oversaw the introduction of on-line ANZJS despite a lot of resistance
  • Oversaw the SSA Review of statistics in Australian Universities (October ’04) initiated by Nick Fisher, the previous President.
