We were pleased to have UseR! 2018 event in July in Brisbane. It was held in the city centre and was well attended. The next one UseR! 2019 will be in Toulouse, France.

Susan A. Murphy, Professor of Statistics, Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, spoke at QUT on 22 August . Susan spoke on Stratified micro-randomised trials with applications in mobile health.

Career Event
The SSA-QLD Young Statistician Careers Seminar was held on the 11 Sept 2018 at QUT, Gardens Points Campus. The event was well received and we had a turnout of approximately 55 people.
Dr Lee Jones, the president of SSA-QLD officiated the event by quoting Google’s chief economist, Hal Varian’s strange prediction back in 2009 “Statistician will be the sexiest job in the next ten years. Data is cheap but what’s scarce is the analytic ability to utilize that data”.

We had a seminar entitled The multi-substance Potentially Affected Fraction as a measure of ecological risk to the Great Barrier Reef in November. A social meet up provided members with valuable networking and it was a good turnout, food was great. It was held at Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point. Drinks and canapes
Across in New Zealand a few members missed this event as there was the 2018 Australasian Applied Statistics Conference in Rotorua. One of our members (Dr Peter Baker) was an invited speaker here and provided a tutorial. (materials available here)
