Statistical Education Section Committee
The SSA Statistical Education Section aims to advance and promote high-quality statistical teaching and learning across all levels of education — from primary and secondary schools to tertiary institutions and industry. The Statistical Education Section committee brings together passionate educators and practitioners with diverse expertise, united by a shared commitment to strengthening statistical literacy and fostering engagement with statistics in Australia and beyond.
Prof Ayse Aysin Bombaci Bilgin BEng., MBA, MMaths, PhD, PostGradDip HE (L&T), MHE (L&M) Ayse is a Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University. She is one of the first 100 women in Australia who have been Professors. She was the President of the International Association for Statistical Education(IASE) (2021-2023) and the Past President of IASE (2023-2025). Ayse is an elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Vice President (2025-2029). Ayse’s research explores applications of statistics in health sciences and learning and teaching in statistics. Dr Karol Binkowski FHEA Karol is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at Macquarie University, Dr Karol Binkowski, engages diverse cohorts through upbeat live lectures that utilise GenAI-enhanced active learning and Peer Instruction. Extending this focus on real-world applications, he also heads the Statistical Consulting Hub, which connects research, industry, and data-driven practice. He seeks collaboration on GenAI education, trialling bold pedagogical interventions, and sharing practices across diverse teaching contexts, as well as building statistical consulting collaborations and new industry partnerships.

Dr Gizem Intepe
Gizem Intepe is the Academic Program Advisor for Data Science and a Lecturer in the School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences at Western Sydney University. She teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate first-year statistics subjects, as well as advanced data science subjects. Gizem is passionate about designing engaging, practical learning experiences that move beyond rote learning, often integrating programming into her statistics teaching.Her contributions to learning and teaching have been recognised with a national Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2022) and a WSU Learning and Teaching Award (2017). Through her APA role, Gizem also contributes to ongoing improvements in the data science curriculum.
Prof Peter Howley Professor of Statistics (UON, -2022), Peter Howley is a national and international leader and award winning academic, educator and practitioner in Statistics, Systems thinking, Process improvement, and integrated STEM. Peter has assumed local, national and international leadership, advisory board and executive roles, collaborating and liaising with national organisations and professionals in health, education, government and industry, including CEOs, executive boards, media, politicians and dignitaries, and strategically aligning with, leveraging and/or impacting international and national initiatives and policy across various domains. He has worked collaboratively with the Australian Council on Health Care Standards, Taipei Medical University, Taiwan Health, Health Services Research Group, Hunter Medical Research Institute, HNE Health, AMPControl, STEM Industry Schools Partnership (NSW Dept of Education), ACARA, ACT Education, NESA, and many other organisations, universities, and interdisciplinary colleagues. Peter has initiated, led and created successful postgraduate and undergraduate programs and courses in Statistics, Data Science, Data Analytics, Integrated STEM+M, Total Quality Management and Systems thinking, as well as initiatives and activities in STEM Education and Outreach for schools and the broader community.
A/Prof Peter Dunn Peter is an Associate Professor in Biostatistics at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and routinely teaches introductory statistics to over 500 students each semester. Peter won an Australian Office of Learning and Teaching Citation in 2012, a student prize at the 16th International Workshop on Statistical Modelling in Denmark, and the EJ Pitman Prize for student talks at the Australian Statistics Conference in 2002. He has also published two textbooks: Generalized Linear Models With Examples in R and Scientific Research and Methodology (which is also available as an interactive online textbook). Peter has over 110 peer-reviewed research publications, has prepared numerous R packages available on CRAN (including the tweedie package, with almost 600,000 downloads since 2020) and co-developed the Dunn-Smyth (quantile) residuals used in statistical modelling. Peter has been invited to give presentations on the R statistical environment at conferences and workshops (including previous Australian Statistics Conferences). |
