Speaker: Prof. Kerrie Mengersen (Queensland University of Technology)

Topic: From Meat Pies to Spaghetti Bolognese

Abstract: Sometimes we undertake statistical analysis with a clear purpose in mind, access to all the necessary data, an obvious statistical model and ample computational resources. Often we don’t. In this presentation, I would like to explore what happens when we substitute ingredients in cooking up our analyses. In particular, I will touch on some of the topics in Bayesian statistics that are of current interest, including the inclusion and impact of prior information, quantifying and communicating statistical uncertainty, and personalised modelling and analysis. I would also like to touch on how the same analogy can apply to our career trajectories.

Biography: Kerrie Mengersen is a Distinguished Professor in Statistics and Director of the Centre for Data Science at Queensland University of Technology. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia, and the Queensland Academy of the Arts and Sciences. Kerrie has a special interest in developing new methods to use new sources of data that can help to provide insights into challenging issues in health, the environment and industry. She has won numerous awards and is on different scientific committees nationally as well as internationally. At QUT, her Bayesian Research and Applications Group (BRAG) comprises awesome postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
