Title: A model for supporting research methods in health and biomedical research and the experiences of a statistician

Abstract: This seminar will focus on a model for supporting researchers (staff and HDR students) in a academic institution. This model was conceived and implemented by the late Prof. Dianna Battistutta at QUT for the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation and led to the creation of the Research Methods Group. The focus of the group is to educate researchers on the range of statistical, epidemiological and qualitative methods they might need to use, enabling them to implement the methods on their own rather than doing it for them. The focus is shifted away from software implementation (i.e., not knowing how to use a software) and on to the design or method under discussion. At its core, this is statistical consulting in an academic setting requiring distinct qualities from the consultants which are not taught in most of the university courses. The value of RMG has been acknowledged by the university as a highly successful unit. Following the restructuring of QUT it is now under the Faculty of Health. In this seminar, various aspects and experiences will be discussed by the Head of the group.

 Presenter: A/Prof. Dimitrios Vagenas

A/Prof. Dimitrios Vagenas is the Head of the Research Methods Group of the Faculty of Health, QUT. He is a biostatistician but he also holds degrees in Animal Science (BSc), Animal Breeding (MSc) and Digital Biology (MSc). He is the current President of the QLD SSA branch as well as a member of the national Accreditation Committee of SSA. He holds AStat accreditation as well as equivalent accreditations in UK (CStat) and USA (PStat). He has been with RMG since 2009, having done a post-doc as a biostatistician, and a post-doc as a mathematical modeller previously. He really enjoys the interaction with scientists, and the variety of experiences his role offers working in a multidisciplinary setting.
