The New South Wales branch of the Statistical Society of Australia warmly invites all undergraduate, postgraduate and early career statisticians and data scientists to attend our annual event for Early Career and Student Statisticians on Thursday 29th September 2022 at 6pm. The event will take place at the Courtyard Cafe of the University of Sydney.

This event is partially sponsored by the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA).

This year we have the pleasure of hosting a handful of inspiring early career speakers and mid-career speakers, working in various industries. The speakers have been invited to share what they’ve learned, what they’ve achieved, what they’ve enjoyed and what surprised them, as well as, perhaps, what they don’t like, what they haven’t learned, and so on. We also have a number of senior industry speakers who have been invited to provide their sage advice, their insights and general guidance to those interested in developing a fruitful career in the industry.

We will have 4 speakers in total and each speaker will give a 10-minute talk, followed by a networking session. Catering and drinks will be provided at the event. There will be plenty of opportunities for attendees to approach the speakers and each other freely.

We charge $20 for non-members at this event to cover for operational costs, though non-member students will also gain a year of membership with SSA NSW.

Join us for the Early Career and Student Statisticians Career Event 2022 and you will also have a chance to win one of our lucky door prizes!

If you are a postgraduate student of the University of Sydney, please contact education@supra.usyd.edu.au for free tickets.”

Please note that you will have to bring your USYD student ID if you registered as a SUPRA member.

Meet our speaker

Earo Wang

Earo works in the Insights & Metrics group at Canva, leading the effort of building Forecasting as a Service. She is an associate editor of the R Journal and has developed many R packages, including tsibble and hts. Previously, she was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. She earned her PhD at Monash University and won the 2019 John Chambers Statistical Software Award from American Statistical Association for the R package tsibble.

Stanislaus Stadlmann

Stanislaus Stadlmann (he/him) holds a joint PhD in Statistics from Macquarie U/University of Göttingen where he specialised in statistical modelling and wrote several R packages that are published on CRAN. Now he works as a Data Scientist for QBE and has developed an NLP model that automatically detects dissatisfied customers. He codes avidly in Python and R and is obsessed with data visualisation. When he doesn’t code he rides his bike around the city or tours rural New South Wales.

Nancy Briggs

Nancy has worked as a statistical consultant for 16 years in academic settings. She is currently in an academic position, but have held previous professional industry roles. Interestingly, Nancy’s PhD degree is in quantitative psychology, not statistics or applied maths and statistics! According to her, consulting is the best combination of scientific research, social chatting, and numbers!

Rachel Ragell

Rachel works as a Data Scientist on the Advanced Analytics team at Lion - where she utilises her statistical and programming skillsets to help inform and assess marketing and sales strategies for several beloved Aussie beer brands. She holds First Class Honours in Mathematical Statistics and worked in urban planning for six years before joining Lion in May 2022
