Join us for the SSA Vic & Tas branch's annual Belz Lecture, where we'll hear from Professor Steve Marron in his talk titled "Challenges of High Dimension Low Sample Size Data Analysis".  Following the talk in-person attendees are invited to join us for dinner to be held at University House - tickets are available here.

Title: Challenges of High Dimension Low Sample Size Data Analysis
Speaker: J. S. Marron, University of North Carolina

Abstract: Understanding what happens when the sample size grows is the foundation of classical mathematical statistics. But modern big data challenges suggest consideration of growing dimension as well. A perhaps extreme case of this has fixed sample size, which results in some counter-intuitive mathematics. These non-standard ways of thinking about data are seen to be the key to understanding important aspects of real genomic data, with some perhaps surprising relationships to robust statistics.  These are clear examples of how it can be both essential, and also beautiful, for statistical intuition to be guided by mathematics.

Speaker biography:

Steve is a statistician / data scientist who invents methodology for gaining insights from integrated and complex data sources, with an emphasis on managing uncertainty. His current major collaborations include joint research with genomicists working on complex high dimensional data collected to study cancer, with computer scientists focussed on the statistics of shape in image analysis applications, and with physicians taking a data centric approach to the notoriously hard to treat disease of arthritis.  Such collaborations have led him to become a pioneer in developing strong connections between statistics and non-standard areas of mathematics, including geometry (fundamental to shape analysis) and topological data analysis.
Steve is Amos Hawley Distinguished Professor of Statistics and Operations Research at the University of North Carolina. His book Object Oriented Data Analysis with Ian Dryden appeared in 2021
