The School of Mathematics and Statistics embodies a broad range of research interests in the areas of applied and pure mathematics and statistics. The School currently has more than fifty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW has been ranked number one in Australia for each of the past six years and has particular strengths in Dynamics, Optimization, Computation, Algebra, Graph Theory, Number Theory, Analysis, Data Science, Statistical Applications, Statistical Analysis and Methods. The school teaches approximately 10,000 individual students in 10,000 course enrolments over 150 active courses in science, engineering and other areas. For administrative purposes, it is split into departments of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work as part of the UNSW Data Science Hub to assist the Director to achieve the overall aims of the Hub which include research excellence, and engagement with the community and industry to establish and consolidate links in Data Science. In particular, the Postdoctoral Fellow will work with Prof. Scott Sisson and Dr. Boris Beranger as part of an Australian Research Council research project to develop new statistical theory and methodology for modelling the risk of real-world extremes.
About the role
* $98K - $108K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
* Fixed Term – 2 years (with possible extension of 12 months based on performance and funding)
* Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role of Postdoctoral Fellow reports to the Director of the UNSW Data Science Hub and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
* Conduct research in extreme value theory, including theoretical development, methodological implementation, application to a range of applied problems, and software development.
* Support the progress of Honours and Masters coursework projects, and co-supervise HDR (Higher Degree Research) students in this research area.
* Perform research collaboratively and individually, which will lead to high quality research articles for publication in internationally refereed journals.
* Initiate, implement, and complete new research projects.
* Develop and contribute to open source and publicly available software packages.
* Present results of research at conferences and other venues.
* Coordinate research activities and participate in the setting of future research directions of the project.
* Effectively engage with the broader scholarly community.
* Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Director and as required.

* Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant (Selection Criteria)
* PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics, statistics, or physics, or an alternative field with a strong mathematical and statistical background.
* Strong knowledge and demonstrated ability in the theory and practice of extreme value theory, including knowledge of stochastic processes, statistical and probability theory, and spatial and spatio-temporal statistical modelling.
* Superior ability to program in a high-level programming language, such as R or Python, with application of version control, and the ability to program in a low-level language, such as C, where required.
* Knowledge of modern computational techniques for optimisation and inference.
* A strong research track record (relative to opportunity) as evidenced by publications in leading journals or conferences.
* Capacity to initiate and conduct independent research
* A capacity to attract and effectively supervise research students.
* Demonstrated capacity to interact successfully with the broader scholarly community and with both internal and external stakeholders
* Ability to work cooperatively in a team and contribute positively to research culture.
* Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
* Excellent leadership skills, including competence in modelling behaviours that align with the University’s values and the ability to foster these in staff, students, and the broader University community.
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
* Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
