Lecturer in Biostatistics and Data Science for Health and Social Science
- Permanent/Continuing, full-time appointment
- Level B: $107,177 - $123,775 + 17% superannuation
Joint appointment with the Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, School of Health and Society, and the Faculty of Engineering & Information Systems, School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic staff member who has a background in biostatistics and data science. The successful candidate will have experience in teaching biostatistics and/or data science to students with limited statistical knowledge and enrolled in public health or other allied health programs. They will have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge and use of R and RStudio for reproducible research will be viewed favourably. Statistical and/or teaching experience within health, medicine and the social sciences is highly desirable.
This exciting new role is a joint appointment across two Schools. The successful candidate will be embedded in both Schools and participate in a range of teaching and research activities across Schools. Teaching responsibilities will include development of new teaching materials, coordinating various subjects in the public health program such as introductory biostatistics, data wrangling and visualisation, and data science. Hence the ability to distil and communicate complex statistical concepts with intuitive and logical approaches is essential. Their teaching will apply scholarly and evidence-based pedagogy. They will also participate in Discipline, School and Faculty activities.

The School of Health and Society is a dynamic, interdisciplinary community of health and social science scholars of national and international standing, with a goal to change society for the better. The School comprises four disciplines, Public Health, Criminology and Social Policy, Social Work and Occupational Health and Safety. We work inclusively with communities, policy-makers, practitioners, industries, key stakeholders and publics to explore how practices, policies and structures contribute to cycles of poor health, social disadvantage and injustice.
The School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics is a vibrant and collegial community with a strong track record in research and teaching. The School incorporates the disciplines of Pure and Applied Mathematics and Applied Statistics, with the position being part of the National Institute for Applied Statistical Research Australia (NIASRA). NIASRA leads the implementation of the UOW strategic Data and Decision Science Initiative, focusing on improving the data literacy of our staff and students and our competitiveness in the Data Science space. NIASRA’s objective is to achieve excellence in applied statistics and data science research by undertaking high-quality, collaborative and high-impact research, consulting and professional education and training.
