The CSIRO NexGen Consortium for Sports Data & AI offers a unique suite of PhD projects, all of which are partnered with key sporting organisations in Australia. These PhD projects come with unique benefits in terms of training and travel budgets, so that PhD candidates are given increased opportunities to develop as professionals, while completing meaningful and impactful projects for sport.
We have one more PhD opportunity with UTS, CSIRO and Netball Australia, and it will focus on our Aussie national team - The Diamonds - who represent our country at World Championships, Commonwealth Games and other international events.
International netball is more competitive than ever, with extremely small margins between success and failure. The Australian Diamonds’ (our Aussie national team) limited preparation time makes it essential to optimize training camp design, session planning, and in-game coaching decisions. This project will look at integrating tactical analysis, physical performance (including spatiotemporal data), technical skills, and mental assessments, in conjunction with modelling approaches that are suitable for athlete monitoring. The aim is to deliver evidence-based insights that improve training environments and support more effective coaching decisions during competition.
The successful candidate will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team with expertise spanning sport and data science, and will contribute to shaping the next generation of evidence-driven practice in elite netball.
