The Early Career and Student Statisticians Network is excited to be hosting a Science Communication Workshop Series in the lead up to ECSSC2021.

Join us virtually to learn essential science communication skills from the experts across four (4) exciting workshops covering:

• Science Communication: Learn how to effectively communicate your research.
• Visualising Your Data: Discover the key aspects of data visualisation and how to produce presentation-ready figures.
• ECSSC Science Communication Series: Honing Your PitchHoning Your Pitch: Work on your communication skills to hone-in on your pitch and communicate your research in a quick and effective manner.
• Presenting Virtually : Get advice and tips about presenting in a virtual format.

We hope participants will come away from the series with the confidence to share their research in an engaging manner.

About workshop 1: Science Communication

The ability to effectively communicate your work to wide range of audiences is an essential part of being a statistician. Even the most brilliant research is wasted if no one knows it has been done or if your  target audience is unable to understand it. In this workshop, Dr Jen Martin will cover the science communication skills needed to prepare an oral presentation for conferences. We will cover a range of research communication aspects including: Defining a narrative for your research, communicating the importance of your work and some tips on coping with nerves. 

About the presenter: Dr Jen Martin

Dr Jen Martin spent many years working as a field ecologist until she decided the most useful thing she could contribute as a scientist was to teach other scientists how to be effective and engaging communicators. Jen founded and leads the University of Melbourne's acclaimed Science Communication Teaching Program. She also practises what she preaches: for 15 years she's been talking about science each week on 3RRR radio, she writes for a variety of publications and MCs events. Jen was named the 2019 Unsung Hero of Australian Science Communication and recieved the 2020 University of Melbourne David White Award for Teaching Excellence.
