Speaker: Dr. Lauren Kennedy, Monash University

Topic: Trials and Triumphs with survey estimation

    Abstract:

Surveys play an important part of society. They help us to understand our society, develop policy to meet specific needs and understand a dynamic and changing world. However, surveys have faced increasing challenges in recent decades as response rates have dropped and therefore design has grown more complex. In this talk we will take a broad view of some of the challenges faced by modern surveys, and some of the solutions available.

    Biography:

Dr. Lauren Kennedy has a PhD in psychology from the University of Adelaide, and completed her postdoctoral training with Prof Andrew Gelman working with the Fragile Families and Poverty Tracker surveys. She currently works as a lecturer at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) where she researches how to use model based methods for survey adjustment, and applied Bayesian statistics in the social sciences. She will soon re-join the Maths School at the University of Adelaide as a lecturer.

    Dinner:

After the talk we will be holding a dinner at Bistro Nguyen’s, 1/80 Alinga Street, Canberra (cnr of Northbourne Avenue) (Bistro Nguyens – Real Vietnamese in the city).

If you are interested in attending the dinner, please let us know by 6pm Monday 27 February by entering your details at SSA Canberra Branch dinner attendance sheet or contacting Anton Westveld (anton.westveld@gmail.com). Please regard this as a firm commitment, not just an intention. For withdrawals after the deadline, please remove your name from the sheet and phone or text Anton.

NOTE: We are offering discounts to SSA early career and student members who attend dinner! For this meeting, dinners will be a fixed charge of $10 for student members and $20 for early career members.
