Abstract:
Our lives are almost completely dependent on digital technology. As we come to terms with what that future will look like - especially in a pandemic environment - we're faced with an immediate challenge: developing a cyber workforce capable of meeting the challenges we face now, and into the future.

The ADF will need cyber operators and an enabling workforce with a range of skills that combine STEM plus the arts - in other words, STEAM. Good ideas need to be well-communicated, and a singular focus on technical skills will limit our ability to fight and win in cyberspace. We need new ways of analysing and solving problems. For young people considering their pathway beyond school or even university, the cyber domain offers significant opportunities. So, what's the ADF looking for in a future cyber operator or enabler? And what does that mean for the cyber engineering community?

Major General Marcus Thompson

Major General Marcus Thompson is the Head of Information Warfare for the Australian Defence Force. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with honours from the University of New South Wales, a Bachelor of Business from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from the University of Canberra, a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from Deakin University, and a PhD in Cyber Security from the University of New South Wales.
