Health Policy Analysis (HPA) is looking for a data science or statistics intern for a period of 6 months. The engagement can be full or part-time.
HPA is a consulting firm working in health care. We work with governments and private sector organisations in Australia and internationally. We evaluate programs/ initiatives, develop planning tools (e.g. projections of health care services) and funding models. More information on our work is at: https://www.healthpolicy.com.au/
We have a statistics and data science team within our broader team of consultants. We work mostly with large health service datasets. For many projects we develop applications, largely Shiny Apps. Most of our statistical or data science work occurs in R, using R Studio Server Pro and R Studio Connect. The intern will:
- Lead work on developing several R packages for internal use within our organisation.
- Contribute to developing Shiny Apps.
- Contribute to HPA statistical/data science projects.
The successful applicant may be approaching graduation, a recent graduate or post-graduate in statistics or data science. People with broader industry experience in addition to qualifications will also be considered. The salary will reflect the level of qualifications, skills and experience. We expect the successful candidate to have:
- Sound knowledge of and experience in the R language and relevant packages. HPA uses the tidyverse packages for core analysis tasks, as well as a wide range of others.
- Experience in one or more of the following:

- developing R packages
- developing Shiny Apps
- interfacing (through R) with database systems such as MS-SQL, Postgres, Spark
- forecasting methods
- statistical analysis, possibly including Bayesian analysis
- AWS environment
- Linux.
- It is desirable that you have experience with other languages and/or environments.
