Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
We invite applications for a continuing position of Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor to join our dynamic and evolving School. You will contribute to the vibrancy of the School's research culture and teach into the Statistics programme. You will be required to undertake a range of teaching responsibilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as supervising research (postgraduate) students. You will be encouraged to conduct collaborative research with both internal and external stakeholders.
Mōu | Who You Are
You will hold (or be near completion) a Ph.D Degree in Statistics or a relevant discipline. Ideally, you will have an internationally recognised research record, which is demonstrated by a strong record of recent, high quality publications. You will display expert knowledge in the statistical field of your choice.
You will have an ability and willingness to deliver high quality teaching in statistics, at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will have experience delivering innovative and effective teaching methods and learning opportunities, which enable a wide range of learners.
If applying for senior lecturer and above, you will also have demonstrated a background in supervising final year undergraduate projects, Masters and Ph.D. students, an ability in collaborating with others in the University, as well as an interest in contributing to Departmental, College, and University activities.

Our School is one of the largest at University of Canterbury, and one of the fastest growing in student numbers. We have a strong statistics programme and from this in recent years we have developed teaching programmes in data science and financial engineering. We have a number of new avenues for growth we are exploring including astro-statistics. Our School is supporting students in their learning and we are well resourced to help you with your teaching. You will be involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as supervising research (postgraduate) students.
In addition to teaching Statistics, Mathematics and Data Science majors, we also teach applied statistics to large classes of students from all over the University. We are at the forefront of developing online and blended learning courses, including STAR courses for high-school students. We offer a professional certificate in applied statistics using R on the international educational EdX platform. Our Statistical Consulting Unit provides statistical help to postgraduate students and staff, supporting University of Canterbury's commitment to excellence in research, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the University and beyond. The School's highly successful MathsCraft NZ initiative promotes community involvement and engagement with mathematics.
The School has staff with international research profiles. We have multiple MBIE and Marsden grants within the School. Staff in our School are active in econometrics, environmental statistics, biostatistics, statistical learning, artificial intelligence, and mathematical statistics research. We encourage collaborative research with both internal and external stakeholders. We will support you in your research whether it is theoretical, or applied and help you develop collaboration networks and find new exciting research opportunities.
