    The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than sixty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. UNSW is the top university in Australia for mathematics across the CWTS Leiden, ARWU, USNews, and QS rankings. In Statistics, the School has research strengths in Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Biostatistics and Ecology, Combinatorics, Data Science, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, and Stochastic Modelling. The School’s research groups are interconnected, with frequent interactions between groups and with other schools and faculties both within and outside UNSW. The School also hosts the newly established UNSW Data Science Hub (uDASH) which is a major strategic initiative of the Faculty of Science to cultivate and promote foundational and applied research in Data Science.

    A Lecturer - Education Focussed (Level B) is expected to carry out teaching and other scholarly activities and to contribute significantly to achieving the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty. The role is associated with statistics and data science education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

    About The Roles
    • Level B - $111K - $131K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
    • Fixed Term – 5 years CTT (Convertible Tenure Track)
    • Full-time (35 hours per week)

    The Lecturer – EF reports to the Head of Department and has no direct reports.

    Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include
    • Actively develop educational resources for statistics and data science education. This may include the development of online materials, exam materials, and lecture notes.
    • Develop learning and teaching collaborations within the School as well links with other groups on campus.
    • Actively contribute to learning and teaching seminars within the School, or more broadly.
    • Supervise Honours and Masters Course Work projects if required; and supervise PhD and Masters Research students if required.
    • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
    • Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
    • Teach statistics and data science courses to a range of audiences at the University.
    • Teach specialist Honours and Masters level courses, if required.
    • Contribute to the design and delivery of the School’s teaching programs and courses.
    • Actively participate in School activities and demonstrate an ability and willingness take on administrative roles in the School.
    • Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School, Faculty and/or University committees as required.
    • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
    • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

    About The Successful Applicant

    (Selection Criteria)

    To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have
    • PhD or equivalent qualification in statistics, data science or relevant mathematical sciences.
    • Demonstrated research ability in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, or Statistics.
    • Evidence of effective teaching experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute to online teaching.
    • Capacity to conduct productive research and/or scholarship related to mathematics education.
    • Experience in student supervision including, e.g., Honours Thesis, Coursework Masters Project, Vacation Scholars Project.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
