About the Role
The National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia (NIASRA) at the University of Wollongong is seeking a statistical data scientist to work on research projects in areas that include statistical spatial modelling; Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification; optimal design; statistical machine learning; and time series modelling. The role will be within the data science team of the Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Research Hub (ITRH) for Transforming energy Infrastructure through Digital Engineering (TIDE), which comprises an international team of multi-disciplinary researchers and industry partners that focus on harnessing data and physics-based science to better understand offshore energy environments (https://tide.edu.au). This is an outstanding opportunity to join one of the forefront groups in Applied Statistics, extend research networks, and apply cutting-edge methods to problems with real-world impact.
Who we are
NIASRA is a highly performing research institute based at the University of Wollongong. Its objective is to achieve excellence in applied statistics research by undertaking high-quality and high-impact research, consulting, and professional education and training. It collaborates extensively with researchers within Australia and internationally and contributes to the University’s objective of being ranked within 1% of universities worldwide. Staff members also participate in the teaching program in Statistics in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and subjects. NIASRA also has a leadership role in developing the University’s Data and Decision Science Framework. The occupant of the position will also be a member of the TIDE ITRH, based at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) at the University of Western Australia (UWA). The successful applicant will benefit from regular interaction with applied scientists and data scientists at the IOMRC as well as industry partners, through regular virtual and in-person meetings.
Who we are seeking
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who has obtained, or has nearly obtained, a relevant Doctoral qualification in computational statistics, spatial statistics, Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification, or closely related fields. The applicant should have a strong track record in publishing manuscripts in internationally reviewed journals, relative to research opportunity, and have demonstrated skills relevant to research in Statistical Data Science, including though not limited to: literature review, software development, qualitative and quantitative research, and publication.
