The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) was established at the University of New South Wales by the Australian Government in 1986 to extend the knowledge base required for effective treatment of individuals with alcohol and other drug related problems and to enhance the overall research capacity in the drug and alcohol field. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Health under the Drug and Alcohol Program. The Biostatistician/Statistician is responsible for supporting the project team in achieving the aims of the study. The role of the Biostatistician/Statistician is to provide statistical advice in study design and analysis, and to undertake statistical analysis on a range of specific NDARC Projects.

Skills and Experience

Level 7:

• Graduate, post-graduate or PhD degree in biostatistics, statistics, medical statistics or applied statistics, or in public health, health services or clinical epidemiology with demonstrable advanced skills in research methods and statistics.
• Demonstrated statistical analysis and/or statistical modelling skills
• Good interpersonal communication skills as evidenced, for example, by experience training staff on the appropriate application of statistical techniques
• Demonstrated organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
• An ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to attend ongoing training and to learn about unfamiliar statistical techniques
• Demonstrated understanding of ethical principles relating to privacy and confidentiality with ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality when dealing with sensitive data
• Knowledge of equal opportunity principles

Level 8 (in addition to the above):

• Substantial experience in the application of statistical analytic approaches
• Demonstrated ability to conceptualise novel research questions in areas relevant to public health or health services research, and to develop these into a clear and feasible statistical analysis plan.
• Demonstrated capacity to carry out or contribute to independent research as indicated by a proven track record of writing reports, academic papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals or funding applications.
