    Position overview

The Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS) in the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Academic Level B) on a full time fixed-term appointment of 1.2 years, commencing on 27th June 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.  The Postdoctoral Fellow will be located in the Acton Campus in Canberra, Australia.

The position is offered in connection with the ARC Linkage project "Surveillance and sampling to maintain absence of pests and diseases". The Australian Research Council funded Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with Chief Investigator (CI), Associate Professor Robert Clark on research projects within the primary themes and topics of the Linkage grant. They will also collaborate with the other CIs, Professor Kathryn Glass and Professor Aparna Lal, named Research Fellow Dr Angus McLure, and partner investigators (PIs) from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

These themes and topics span but are not limited to:

    • Development of models suitable for group testing results of rare events, including nested beta models and generalized linear mixed models.
    • Investigation of the properties of these models, including robustness to mis-specification, using both theoretical derivation and simulation studies.
    • Application of these models to case study datasets of importation testing.
    • Extension of existing models to allow for imperfect sensitivity and specificity.
    • Development of designs to estimate parameters associated with clustering of contamination within testing groups.
    • Development of efficient algorithms for fitting models to group test data, performing statistical inference.
    • Implementation of methods in package/s in the R Statistical Environment and in R Shiny application/s.
    • Consultation, communication of results and collaboration with relevant staff at DAFF.

We are seeking applications from candidates with either a track record or proven potential in research in Statistics and/or Statistical Science.  It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Statistics (or in a related discipline of relevance to the Linkage Project).  For a successful candidate who has not already been awarded a PhD, it is required that the thesis has already been submitted before taking up employment.
