The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading national department for the mathematical sciences with a diverse teaching and research program in statistics, applied mathematics and pure mathematics. As well as offering several specialist undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs in statistics with rapidly growing enrolments, we are a major provider of service teaching in statistics and mathematics for the university. Our areas of strength in statistics include biostatistics, computational statistics, applied statistics and mathematical statistics. The Department is also highly regarded for its contributions in applied mathematics, notably in fluids and electromagnetism, and in several branches of pure mathematics including category theory and harmonic analysis.
