The Statistical Society of Australia (SSA) will host the Early Career & Student Statisticians Conference (ECSSC) 2021 virtually from July 26th to 1st August, 2021. The conference is aimed at developing, maintaining and improving contact and support amongst ECSSs working in various scientific disciplines, including agriculture, economics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and environmental statistics.
Keynote Speakers
We have an amazing line-up of keynote speakers from all occupations, including:
- Paola Oliva-Altamirano, Innovation Lab, Our Community/SmartyGrants
- Kendra Vant, Xero
- Helena Jia, Educational Training Service
- Minh-Ngoc Tran, University of Sydney
- Peter Taylor, University of Melbourne
Topics covered in sessions will include all the major statistical areas and will expose students to various career possibilities, including academia and industry.
Workshops
Several workshops leading up to the conference are available for our delegates, including:
Early-bird registration for pre-conference workshops for SSA student members is AUD$90.

Abstract Submissions
We're looking for abstracts that cover any topic that might interest an ECSS. No finding is too insignificant or story too boring! We encourage ECSSs to take the opportunity to put themselves out there and perhaps inspire and encourage others on their career journeys.
Abstracts can range from reporting a novel way to solve a tricky data problem, recounting career highs and lows, composing a bio of an inspirational statistician, or even introducing a new programme that may not be widely known in the statistical community. As far as the ECSSC Committee is concerned, everyone has something meaningful to contribute to our beloved statistical profession.
Prizes for Best Presentations and Posters
We have amazing prizes for the best presentations and posters! Furthermore, winners will be remembered forever more on the SSA website. For a list of past winners, please visit: https://www.statsoc.org.au/Best-presentation-at-a-Young-Statisticians-Conference. Your name could be on that list this year!
Video Competition
ECSSs have the opportunity to submit a 1-3 minute long video to discuss either their research, work, or any other statistical-topic that’s close to their heart. There are more prizes to be won, and many more bragging rights to be had! For more information regarding the competition and prizes, please click here.
High school career day
We have set aside a day (31st July 2021) for our future budding statisticians! High school students, or teachers of high school and primary school students, are encouraged to join the conference. Information will be available regarding possible career pathways in statistics, addresses by a careers panel, with panellists representing different stages of career progression, and fun and interactive activities. Registration is free of charge for school students. Simply upload a copy of your student ID at the time of registration as proof of your student status.
